“As parents,” says Michelle Obama, “it breaks our hearts to think that any child feels afraid everyday in the classroom, or on the playground, or even online. It breaks our hearts to think about any parent loosing a child to bullying, or just wondering if their kids will be safe when they leave for school in the morning.”

If this were any other group of kids, we would never stand for this. Yet with LGBT youth, we somehow believe it’s okay for their daily lives to be torture, as if it will inure them to the vicious realities of being a minority class.

It’s not okay. It’s our job to protect these kids, and we’ve been failing at that.
