Woman’s psyche, of course, becomes an acknowledged scientific enigma, like the inner substance of matter, or the shape of the universe. The American psychologist G. Stanley Hall calls it “terra incognita,” and when Freud wrote of the “riddle of the nature of femininity” he spoke for generations of scientists who puzzled over the strange asymmetry of nature which had only made one sex fully normal.
